LYING

This cartoon below depicts a family at home when the daughter lies to her mother about putting her bike away. The bike is damaged because she lied and her parents insist that lying is alway wrong. However, when she receives a hand knitted sweater from her grandma that she loathes, she is encouraged to say that she loves it to her grandma. Do children understand the ‘white lie’ and how is it justified if truthfulness is always encouraged?
